Our Great Escape:

Some might call it running away. Some might go a bit further and call it a kidnapping. What actually happened though, was two people connected in a deep and intimate way at an exact moment in time where we realized the only way an “US” would be possible is if we escaped.

…And a great Escape was made. Now, on the road, we are searching for the perfect spot to call home.

“Operation Pineapple Juice”, as I and I alone refer to it as, at its most basic level, was a decided curveball thrown back at life. Objective: Do the thing you’d never ever do and see what happens. She bit. Under cover of short visits to family for a holiday, we departed purgatory for the unknown heaven or hell that we would be stepping into together once we met up again two weeks later.

Pink and red azalea flowers blooming with green leaves against a blue sky with scattered clouds.
A scenic coastal view featuring the ocean meeting the sky with some scattered clouds, and a green rocky shoreline with small trees and bushes.
A person walking on a narrow wooden bridge in a dense forest of tall redwood trees with sunlight filtering through the canopy.

The two weeks were…nerve-wracking; unsure of cold feet over a crazy plan of a first-date that could last an unknown amount of time - on the road, sharing space, sharing soul, staying in VRBO’s and AirBnB’s all along the Oregon Coast.

But the plan worked. Knees shaking in a tiny taqueria, on the outskirts of some tiny town on the California/Oregon border, I saw her walk in and my head, my heart, and my gut finally agreed I had made a good decision.

As I write this, we’re in a layover of sorts. We’ve traveled five thousand miles over the last two weeks, and its time to resupply and relax. It has been several months and several thousand miles since we first escaped. Now we are gearing up for another escape… the escape home(so much cheese).

A lakeside scene with a rocky beach, green trees, and hills under a partly cloudy blue sky.
A peaceful stream flowing through a forest with trees and rocks along the banks, some trees with green leaves and some without leaves, under a clear sky.
A rugged coastline with dark rocks, green vegetation, and the ocean waves crashing against the shore under a partly cloudy blue sky.

Home? Travel? Both?

Home is not just some structure where you eat, sleep, shower, and poo. Home is where don’t have to remind yourself to be happy, you just are. It’s a place where you can stop pretending, remove the masks, stop justifying, and simply be. A place where you are always enough. I’ve never found that. Have you?

That’s what we are looking for. The tangible list is simple but rare: land, a climate that sustains life, lax zoning for greenhouses and cabins, a sparse population, and beauty. Maybe we’re too picky. Maybe not. Maybe we’ll find that mythical place. Maybe we won’t. All I can say is the search will be fun.

You might find yourself asking, “If this is a travel blog, why are you talking about finding home”?

Well, this mythical place that feels like home, it may not even exist, but the journey to find it will hopefully open some eyes to the beauty that lives in our backyards. The map is open, we escaped, and every cute small town, forgotten state park, quirky store, mom-and-pop cafe, mountain lake, perfect camping spot, unique Air BnB or VRBO stay, and any and all points of interest, they will guide us to this place we seek.

Along the way we will try to absorb all the beauty we can and promptly share it. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll see that going to a cute house for a few nights, visiting state parks and enjoying nature, and going out to cute mom-and-pop diners in a small town might be a lot cheaper and a lot more fulfilling than some glitzy chain hotel in some fancy crowded city for one night.

We’ll stay at unique VRBO or AirBnB spots, small-town inns, campsites, and other interesting places, and document how people live, decorate, how they build their home. Every great idea is borrowed from another-so we’ll immerse ourselves in great ideas and bring them home with us, wherever that may be.

WHO WE ARE:

Me?

I’m just some guy. I wish I could say that my spirit animal was some cool bear or dog, a big fluffy thing, but no, my spirit animal is probably a slithery chameleon. I’ve worn a thousand faces, and with those thousand faces, I’ve worn ten thousand hats. I’ve managed staffs at high-end private clubs, restaurants in resort towns, and once a community for a year, after a bad hurricane. I’ve been around and I blend well. I’m just some guy, and if we had a beer together in a bar, you’d probably walk away wondering what I look like. That’s not a bad thing. That’s by design.

As a person, I’ve spent most of my life looking at only dark colors. I’m really trying hard to focus on the light, the bright, and the things that won’t make you hate hope. I’ve lived through some stuff, hell we all have, but even though it is a battle sometimes to find a smile, I am going to continue to try and find that smile every single day. I’ve found that being outside and just seeing and appreciating the rock we live on has done wonders for me in being able to find reasons to smile. It is a beautiful world, and I wish more people took the time to really stop and take a look. Maybe you’ll see something. Maybe you’ll look at some majestic waterfall, realize that you are not really much bigger than the ant walking by you, and you’ll suddenly feel like the petty shit doesn’t matter. Drop the needless weight, come outside, and play. It is really that easy.

Who am I though? I’m just some guy. I want to see beautiful things, learn to grow food, and I want bees!!! I will try my best not to offend anybody and not touch any subject matter that would be deemed heavy. After all, this is about cool places to stay and visit, maybe play a bit with words in an attempt to make them prettier, but not anything to be taken seriously. I hope our pictures and stories make you smile for a minute or two, maybe even get you off of your device and on your way to see pretty stuff in the real world.

Me?

Who am I and why the hell do you care?

Well frankly, you shouldn’t care and I have no business telling you about life. But…

To say life has been easy would be a lie. Saying life has been full of beauty that has often come from ashes is closer to the truth, and one I feel is not worth sharing, so who am I? Just some gal in her late 20’s looking for a peaceful place to nap outdoors and rest her soul. Ideally it will be in a garden I’ve grown and watched bloom, harvested from, and spent many hours in. Ideally there will be a flowing Creek, lots of flowers, bees, birds, bugs everywhere, and lots of life being lived. This is where I will call home. I don’t really want much, but tit has been and will be an adventure story to find it; to find the place we don’t want to leave, and the place we invite others to enjoy with us.

This is our mission while we travel around taste-testing other people’s lives; spending time in their homes, and exploring the places they love and think worthy of sharing with others.

To be human is to have an experience…experience the good, the bad, the scary and unknown, to dive deep into lakes and swim across rivers, to meet new people, go to distant places and do the things you fear. We want to experience all of it and share it with you in hopes we can influence you to live life the way you want. We are not influencers, we are not well off, we come from broken homes and burned bridges. Like I said in the beginning, I’ve seen the beauty that can come from an ash pile and it is worth it.

So I guess if you follow along you’ll find us searching for home while experiencing what we think being “human” truly is.
